Interactive Sentences to Build Academic Language for Core Success
Fluency with simple, compound and complex sentences is essential for ELs to write effectively, comprehend academic texts and articulate thinking across the curriculum. However, traditional grammar lessons in many state-adopted materials fail to equip language learners with the linguistic and conceptual tools they need to succeed. In this workshop, participants will gain resources and strategies for teaching sentence construction in meaningful academic contexts. Model interactive lessons will demonstrate how to build conceptual scaffolds, teach academic clause-linking vocabulary (since, so, after, while, etc.), and empower students a variety of ways to articulate their ideas. E.L.D. and content area teachers alike will appreciate how quickly these new tools can be integrated into any existing curriculum to accelerate academic language development.
